Head-to-Head Weekly Debate

,

Kyle Parkhurst: The start of the offseason in the NFL had all the experts picking the Broncos to be the favorite to win the AFC and, potentially, the Super Bowl. However, after a bevy of off-field mishaps and injuries, much doubt now lingers over the Broncos. The recent six-game suspension against Von Miller puts them in an even tougher situation. Would you still consider the Broncos to be a favorite to win it all even without their defensive and emotional leader, Miller?

Stan Schrock: Miller’s talent and leadership will definitely be missed for six games, but the Broncos have nothing to worry about. Defensively, the Broncos’ front four are still solid. Champ Bailey and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie both have the ability to be top-ten corners.

The only real problem facing the Broncos’ defense during Miller’s six-game suspension is the linebacker position. Besides Shaun Phillips on the weak side, most of the Broncos’ linebackers are unproven, but Phillips and veteran Keith Brooking should fill Miller’s absence to avoid a major drop-off in run defense.

K.P.: I think the Broncos will struggle. The first six opponents Denver faces are all heavy running teams. Baltimore, the Giants, Philly and the Cowboys are all going to be trying to run it right up the middle. With the secondary full of questions—like the aging Champ Bailey who looked hobbled during the preseason—it might be a tough stretch. The offense will produce, but if the defense struggles, I don’t think they will be able to rely on outscoring opponents every week.

Do I still think they can win the AFC west? Probably, given that the only real threat is Kansas City, and that’s still to be seen. The Broncos will be vulnerable, and I’m sure they are really looking forward to the regular season action after a very rough off season.

S.S.: The Broncos’ first six opponents had a combined record of 37-59 last season, including Oakland, Jacksonville and Philadelphia. The Cowboys shouldn’t give the Broncos too much trouble, and the Giants are notoriously mediocre in the first half of the season. Baltimore could obviously pose the biggest threat but also have a new look without Anquan Bolden.

The Broncos ranked in the top five of every major statistical category last season, including total offense. If the Denver defense can battle against the power run game, the offense will score enough points through the first six games.

Denver fans, ye need not worry because your beloved Broncos should open the season, at worst, 4-2.
