CMU’s women’s basketball team made huge headlines with their run at a national title this year, falling in the Elite Eight. The baseball team, slated to start the RMAC tournament May 10, is currently on its quest to win a national championship.

While these teams rightfully garner much attention, they often leave other teams out of the limelight. The men’s cycling team recently clinched its second consecutive national championship, but it went widely unnoticed.

“The lack of notoriety does kind of affect us,” sophomore cyclist John Barnett said. “We just won our second consecutive national championship, yet hardly anyone at this school even knows we have a team.”

The team has proved to the nation to be one of the best cycling programs in the entire country and Barnett is hoping that students start giving them a little recognition.

“Next season we will be a varsity sport, and we are getting a banner up in Brownson Arena next year which is pretty exciting,” Barnett said. “A lot of students are in there for games, and being able to see our name up there will be pretty awesome.”

Patric Rostel, a graduate student who also cycled on the team this year, took over as head coach after the coaching position was vacated earlier this spring.

The team is hoping to have made a name on campus, and they believe they will be known nationwide for the program at CMU.

“Colorado is considered to be the best cycling state in the nation now,” Barnett said. “We definitely put CMU on the map, and now we are recruiting a lot of out-of-state talent to come race for us, and help continue the tradition.”
