With ASG election results in the books, former student body president Telbe Storbeck is looking forward to the future. “More than anything, I’m going to start focusing on the GREs [Graduate Record Examinations],” he said. Storbeck plans on pursuing a master’s degree in public administration so he can develop a career in city management.
It’s an ambitious goal, but if there’s anything Storbeck has made evident in his past year as president, it’s that leadership and management are second-nature to him.
“I would use the term natural-born leader,” Fee Allocation Committee Chair Ashley Sutton-Daniels said.
Storbeck came into ASG as a professional studies senator in the spring of 2011. Since then, he’s risen to the challenge numerous times and tackled tough projects like the development of Mav Rides, Greek Life and on-campus concerts.
“I think that we’ve kind of been growing with the school,” ASG President Elect Ariel Diamond said.
Storbeck rose through the ranks of ASG by becoming senate leader and then casting his bid for presidency last spring. In a close election, the team of Storbeck and Diamond won by sixteen votes.
“It’s a very interesting dynamic,” Storbeck said, “because the president is really that person that gets all the information.”
In addition to handling all that information, Storbeck had an internship with the Fruita city manager and competed as a student athlete for the varsity wrestling team.
“He would show up to meetings in a suit right after practice with his hair wet from a shower,” Diamond said.
Despite a full plate, Storbeck refused to let his commitment to the student body falter, and exhibiting the true spirit of a leader he continued tackling major development projects for the university.
“It’s always been his full effort, best foot forward,” Student Trustee Amberlee Sikes said.
Building off the work of two presidents before him, Storbeck has been instrumental in moving library renovations higher up the priority list.
“If you’re like me, you’re in there all the time,” he said.
While renovations may not be currently underway, Storbeck has helped to ensure that there’s enough funding to get them done even while new construction continues across campus.
“I would like to see it farther than it is, but at the same time, these things take time,” he said.
Storbeck’s leadership skills were challenged during the biennial budgeting process, where he hoped to distribute sufficient funding throughout the university without raising student fees.
“As a student, you really feel how much these things cost,” Storbeck said.
Not surprisingly, the results were just that.
“He did a really good job listening to the students and what the University needs but still sticking to his goal of not raising student fees,” Diamond said.
Storbeck was recognized for all of these accomplishments and more at last week’s Mav Awards, where he received Organization Leader of the Year and Student Leader of the Year.
“There’s no way this year would have been even close to successful without my team,” he said.
Storbeck will finish his undergraduate work next fall as a resident assistant.
