Fall Sports Preview: Volleyball

CMU volleyball has been training all spring in preparation for the 2013 fall season, where it looks to improve upon its 17-11 record from last year. The Mavericks started out 13-2 on the season, with their only losses coming to ranked opponents. A seven-match losing streak halted the hot start and put the Mavericks in an unfavorable position in the RMAC.

“We had an 11-game turnaround from the last season and started off very strong,” sophomore setter Jordyn Moody said. “The losing streak kept us from being where we wanted to be, but we came back from it and were able to make the playoffs. We did much better than the previous season.”

They closed out the regular season with three straight wins, but lost in the opening round of the conference tournament to conclude their season.

The Mavericks lose three key players to graduation in Kelly Regimbal, Megan Rush and Rachael Beaty. Coach Dave Fleming and his staff expect current players to step into those leadership roles and have seen glimpses of it in spring training.

“It’s going to be tough losing our seniors because they were all great players,” Moody said. “We have been adapting to playing without them so far in the spring and we are bringing in some good players in the fall. There are players who have stepped into that kind of senior role in the offseason.”

The team will begin the fall season at the Angelo State Tournament in early September.
