Positive Movement: Student group launches Art and Culture Jam

CMU’s Positive Movement will host an Art and Culture Jam on April 5 on the South Patio of the University Center and in the South Ballroom. There will be free art exhibits and live music for students to enjoy.

The Founder of Positive Movement, senior Nicholas Moore and senior Jesse Johnson, are collaborating with the rest of the Positive Movement to launch the Art and Culture Jam. The event will include the artwork and the talents of various artists, including CMU students.

“The purpose of the Art and Culture Jam is to showcase the local artists and give them a venue to do it through,” Moore said. “We are doing that in combination with giving a place to showcase culture in the Grand Valley community. What we are really looking for is generating some conversations about what is culture in this area or what culture is in general, and doing that through the artwork as well as showcasing different types of artists.”

The Art and Culture Jam will include an international photography exhibit that will feature photographs containing different aspects of culture from all over the world. Two members of the Positive Movement took the pictures. Another exhibit is an interactive painting station based on a concept the Positive Movement has used before. The exhibit will have several blank canvases spread over a wide area in which anyone can paint.

“We have often just left a big blank canvas on campus and we are doing a full exhibition style of that concept,” Moore said. “The reason being, we believe in the collaborative energy of artwork. Having that collective energy exhibit is a big part of our goal in this event.”

The Art and Culture Jam will have various forms of live entertainment including music and hopefully dance. The music will highlight several local bands and artists as well as The KnightBeats from Colorado Springs. The KnightBeats are a reggae, experimental, rock that have previously opened for Nathen Maxwell of Flogging Molly and many others.

“We are really pumped that they are coming to our event and volunteering their time for us,” Moore said. “Other bands include History of Time with Roy Varley, another student band, Not On Tap, [which] features two students, we have Bryce MacEvoy, he has a great voice and incredible presence, and then we have many more. We have seven acts lined up, this is a seven hour event.”

There is a chance that a fire-dancing group, Illumicirque, will also be performing at the event.

All of the entertainers are volunteering their time to be a part of Art and Culture Jam. Local artists like Bryce MacEvoy, who will be playing at the event, are excited to participate in the Jam.

“I’m stoked,” MacEvoy said. “I’m excited to play some music for some wonderful artistic people.”

The event will start on the South Patio from 12-3 p.m. and move in to the South Ballroom of the UC from 6-10 p.m. For any students who wish to submit a piece of art for the Art and Culture Jam, Positive Movement will be accepting pieces through March 22.

“Thanks to everyone who has supported us and thanks to everyone who has volunteered their time [for] this event,” Moore said. “Everyone is coming together for the purpose of making it happen and for the purpose of art and culture and that is really neat.”

To become more involved, the Positive Movement meets 7 p.m. on Monday nights in Houston Hall room 214. To contact the Positive Movement or learn more about their organization, email them at positivemovementworldwide@gmail.com or find Positive Movement Worldwide on Facebook.
