Mavs sweep, win streak extended

CMU’s eight-game win streak was grounded last Saturday, along with more than 500 flights in Denver, as more than 14 inches of snow accumulated in surrounding areas of the city.

The team’s four-game series with Regis University set to be played through Sunday was pushed forward for doubleheaders on both Friday and Saturday, but only Friday’s games could be completed.

“We were expecting to not play any games because of the snow, so it was good we got those two games in,” pitcher Nolan Snell said after starting the day on the mound for the Mavs. “We were just happy to play.”

The Mavericks took care of the Rangers on Friday with 6-5 and 2-0 wins on the day to stretch their record to 12-4 and their win streak to eight. This is their longest streak of the season and fourth of at least eight wins in the past three seasons.

Snell (2-1) struggled early in the first game, giving up three runs in the second inning, but kept the Rangers from scoring again through the rest of his 5.1 innings pitched. Another two runs by Regis in the bottom of the eighth had them up 5-2 going into the ninth, when Justin Rosales scored on a balk to spark the Mavs. Colton Schoelkopf and Braden Box then scored off of a two-RBI single by Mitch Corwin to tie the game at five all.

“It was a cool feeling when we just got hit after hit and got that win,” Snell said. “It gives us a lot of confidence.”

Junior first-baseman Kennedy Kinkade notched his only hit of the game with a single to the left side to score Mitch Corwin and the eventual game-winning run. Cody Lahman (3-0) picked up the win in relieving for CMU.

“We just kept our energy up and took advantage of a young pitching staff,” pitcher Matt Williams said, who started the second game for the Mavs.

The Mavericks scored a run in the first and second innings to give Williams (1-1) a 2-0 cushion early. That would prove to be all that he needed while pitching a complete, seven-inning shutout for his first win on the season, despite owning a team-low 2.37 ERA for starting pitchers.

“My main goal, as a starter, is to keep us in the game,” Williams said. “But it was pretty good to get my first win as a Maverick.”

Corwin was responsible for five of the eight runs scored by CMU through both games on Friday, with four RBI and a run scored. Junior outfielder Austin Kaiser stole his team-high 10th base in Friday’s second game against Regis.

The Mavs will look to extend their win streak and 6-0 RMAC mark when they travel to Golden this weekend for a four-game series with Colorado School of Mines (5-8, 2-4 RMAC).
