Valerie Trudell is an outgoing and adventurous sophomore at CMU majoring in Business Marketing. Born on May 8, 1993, in Texas, Trudell moved at age two to Maine, where she lived until she was 13. Trudell moved to Montrose for high school before completing her senior year in Florida and returning to Colorado for college.

“I went to CU Denver for one year and then transferred to CMU,” Trudell said. “As soon as you leave the dorms there, you probably only recognize two people on campus, but at CMU, it’s like a community.”

This is Trudell’s first year as a Professional Studies senator as well as her first year on ASG.

“When I first came here, I wanted to do student government because it interested me at CU Denver,” Trudell said. “I think I will do it next year. It’s good to be a part of the community and know what’s going on. I feel like I’m actually committing myself to being here.”

Trudell described herself as “an extreme sports type of person” and an adrenaline junky.

“I’m so done with winter,” Trudell said. “It’s only good for one thing and that’s snowboarding.”

Along with snowboarding, Trudell enjoys skydiving. In the summer of 2011, she got the opportunity to go skydiving in Aruba after her aunt promised her a trip if she got straight A’s her senior year of high school.

“The adrenaline that you get, you can’t compare to anything,” Trudell said. “In Aruba, we also went horseback riding and scuba diving and swam to a wrecked ship in the ocean. I swam about five feet away from a dolphin.”

According to Trudell, Florida was in stark contrast to the Colorado weather and culture she was used to.

“When I first got to Florida, I almost passed out outside of the airport,” Trudell said. “It was so hot. It’s very hot all the time. Florida is very manicured. There’s palm trees everywhere, and gated communities are the norm.”

One of the main differences for Trudell was the people.

“We lived about an hour above where Miami is,” Trudell said. “A lot of people spoke different languages. There’s a lot more diversity.”

Trudell has also visited New York before and wants to end up there eventually.

“I love New York City,” Trudell said. “It’s my city. I want to be there when I graduate. The only thing I don’t like is that everything is really expensive.”

Trudell has an elaborate plan for herself after graduating from CMU. After starting a small business, she wants to progressively move toward having her own mall and eventually becoming a philanthropist.

“I want to create a business that teaches people, like Luminosity, but for students,” Trudell said. “It would be based around what you study. Business is in my blood, and it’s the key to being a philanthropist. I want people to really understand who they are and what they are, and know that they can change themselves and, their surroundings. You can change the world, in a general sense.”
