GJ Rockies may offer internships

CMU mass communication students may soon have the possibility of a paid internship with the Colorado Rockies, filming home games at Suplizio Field this summer.

“The Grand Junction Rockies approached President Foster and [he] put us in touch with them to televise their 39-game season,” Mass Communication, Professor Dan Flenniken said.

He and Greg Mikolai, another mass communications professor, are leading the potential internship, which is still in its early stages of planning and budgeting.

“We’re in the process of putting a bid package together,” Flenniken said.

On April 1, the mass communications department will submit this bid package to ensure that the opportunity will fall within the budget limits of both parties. If the bid is accepted, two students will participate in an internship this summer, filming, editing and producing game footage. The games will not be aired, but they will be available on the GJ Rockies’ website.

“It will be similar to what we do with sports broadcasting here,” Flenniken said.

CMU will be the first college partnership like this in the GJ Rockies’ conference, and the opportunity will allow not only the two interns, but also other students to get hands-on experience producing graphics, doing tech work and being part of a camera crew.

Flenniken believes that part of what made this possible is that the mass communication department recently replaced their video equipment, which freed up studio cameras to be used at Suplizio field.

There will be four cameras, the most expensive one being in centerfield, which will need to be run in to the camera operators through high-priced cables. Another camera will be directly behind home plate, as the GJ Rockies want all-field coverage.

“They really said they wanted the very best,” Flenniken said. “One of the most expensive parts of this is to do it and do it well.”

Students interested in the internship will have a few requirements to fill before being considered.

“We’ll have an application once we know for sure we’re going to do it,” Flenniken said. “[Students] will have to have some skill and knowledge.”

The internship will start at the GJ Rockies first home game on June 24 and continue through the beginning of September. Interested students can contact Flenniken or Mikolai with questions or to get more information.
