Meet Your Senators: Brittney Long

Brittney Long, born in Laguna Beach, Calif., on Sept. 27, 1991, says she’s always known what she’s wanted to do with her life: pursue a career in criminal justice.

Long, the Social and Behavioral Sciences Senator for ASG, is pursuing a double major in Criminal Justice and Forensics.

“Obviously, when I was little, you know, I wanted to be a vet,” Long said. “But who doesn’t want to be a vet when they are little?”

At age eight, Long moved with her family from California to Gunnsion, where she graduated high school. She then enrolled in the Criminal Justice Program at Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colo., and served as Student Vice President before coming to CMU in the fall of 2012.

Upon enrolling at CMU, Long picked up where she had left off and resumed her studies in Criminal Justice as well as psychology.

“Science is what I’m good at,” Long said. “I love helping people. I feel like bringing justice to people is what I’m supposed to do. And studying psychology has really opened my eyes up to how people can be.”

Although Long hasn’t yet had the opportunity to apply what she’s learned about criminal justice to a real-life situation, she has high hopes for herself, including entering the Police Academy program at Western Colorado Community College after graduating from CMU next spring.

“I want to be an FBI homicide detective,” Long said. “That’s the dream.”

After completing Police Academy, Long says she would love to move to New York City to obtain a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice.

For now, though, Long seems content with her busy life as a student and employee at both Famous Dave’s and Tan in Paradise in Grand Junction. Apart from her studies, involvement in ASG and her two jobs, Long enjoys playing club volleyball at CMU and singing.

“I’m supposed to start singing here on campus,” Long said. “But I have no time!”

As for her role as the Social and Behavioral Sciences Senator, Long emphasizes the importance of being involved on campus.

“I think it’s exciting being able to be a voice for the students,” Long said. “Everyone is very different in ASG. I think I represent a certain group of people, and so does everyone else [in ASG].”

However, before she can start thinking about her next vote for ASG, Police Academy or singing, Long is looking forward to spending spring break, as she does every year, back in Laguna Beach with her family.
