GEMS plans biannual Save a Life Day

Imagine coming across an injured person in desperate need of help, but you don’t know how to help. The GEMS, Graduate Education of Medical Sciences Club, wants to fix this.

The GEMS club will host Save a Life Day on Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m, in the Maverkick Center, room 165.

“We will be certifying people for free. It is CPR and first aid,” GEMS Vice President Kaitlyn Krug said.

The certification that participants receive is done through the Red Cross and is good for a year.

“It helps people get jobs, like babysitting,” Krug said.

However, looking good on a resume is not the only benefit to getting the certification.

“We also do first aid, like dressing wounds,” Krug said. “So, if you see someone who is injured, you can help them.”

GEMS offers the class to students and faculty free while charging $35 for non-students.

“A normal certification is around $100,” Krug said.

There are already a large number of participants signed up for Save a Life Day.

“My email has been crazy,” Krug said.  “Every time I check it I have more people wanting to sign-up. There are very few spots left. We stop at 60 people.”

The club borrows supplies from the nursing department to accommodate the 60 people. Overall, the class is popular. There are parents who want their kids to be prepared in case something happens, and a Girl Scout troop has signed up for the event.

“This is our biannual fundraiser,” Krug said. “A lot of members of the club get certified as instructors, so part of it [the funds] goes there.”

The rest of the money helps the club bring in speakers to their club meetings. Since the club is geared toward further education in the medical field, the majority of their meetings include a talk from a pharmacy, dental or other medical school. The club has also driven to Denver to visit schools there.

“We also help members become familiar with exams that they will eventually have to take, like the MCAT or the PCAT,” Krug said.

The club meets at 6 p.m. every other Wednesday in Wubben Hall, room 203. The next meeting is on Wednesday.
