Meet Your Senators: Sheila Cloud

Sheila Cloud was born on Sept. 24, 1992, in Grand Junction, but moved at age eight to the small town of Scottsbluff, Neb. She made the decision to attend CMU and landed right back in Grand Junction. She is now a junior majoring in Environmental Science and one of ASG’s Senators for the Department of Physical, Environmental and Biological Sciences.

“Scottsbluff is pretty small,” Cloud said. “I played a lot of sports – swimming, softball, basketball, tennis, and track and field. Everyone over there does a lot of sports since there’s not a bunch to do.”

Cloud’s father is a farmer, and when she was younger, she lived on a farm with her two sisters. She was also a part of the National FFA Organization, formerly the Future Farmers of America.

“We did agriculture-based things like horticulture,” Cloud said.

Cloud currently works for the Outdoor Program on campus and enjoys many different types of outdoor activities.

“I used to like kayaking a lot,” Cloud said. “But I really like backpacking in foreign countries.”

In fact, last winter she had the opportunity to backpack through Brazil for 35 days with the Outdoor Program.

“It was their summer,” Cloud said. “It was rainy, but it was still really awesome. It was cool to be able to experience a culture in the way that we do with the Outdoor Program. We stay at the hostels and eat where the locals do. We would go on hikes through different jungles and took the bus a lot of the time.”

Cloud is a huge fan of travelling and plans on visiting many countries in the future, including India and Greece.

“I want to see the culture a lot,” Cloud said. “It’s what interests me the most. I want to see all the cool, natural wonders of the world. My favorite thing about Brazil is the culture and how loving they were. It made me a lot more loving myself. I think they’re definitely about enjoying their life rather than just accomplishments.”

The small-town native, though a lover of travel, has not always had the approval of her parents.

“They didn’t really want me to travel out of the country,” Cloud said. “My proudest moment was breaking away from my parent’s opinions and travelling even though they don’t see it necessary. It totally is. It just gives you a whole new perspective on life. You get to see the way other people live.”

Cloud got involved with ASG through her previous involvement with the Sustainability Council.

“I heard there were positions open ,and that’s pretty much why I ran,” Cloud said. “I wanted to be involved in what was going on because we needed someone at a higher lever to represent us. I like being aware of what’s going on at the school and having a say in that.”

Although Cloud does not have any specific plans for her major, she has a vivid future in mind.

“I want to live next to the ocean and be happy,” Cloud said. “I just want to be outside a lot.”

Cloud is continuing her passion for travel by going to Ireland over spring break with her sister for a week.
