Hockey eyeing .500 finish

The CMU men’s hockey team (8-10) traveled to Golden this weekend to play Colorado School of Mines in a two-game series. The Mavericks split the series but had a strong first game on Friday night, getting the 10-6 win behind top performers Cole Sweeney, Cote Dickerson and Phil Flink.

“So far it’s been a really good season because we just have a good core of guys,” coach Matt Meiring said. “It’s really cool to see that because, as a coach, I haven’t really seen a team get along so well together.”

Despite dropping the second game 9-3 to Mines and falling to 8-10, Meiring feels that his team has exceeded the expectations of many. The odds have been stacked against the Mavs all season, but they continue to win games against more nested teams.

“We are still an emerging sport here and don’t have a home rink, so I feel that we have had a really impressive season so far,” Meiring said. “We can finish .500 on the season if we win out next weekend, and I think that these guys can do it. They have their sights set on it, and we just got to get it done.”

The Mavericks’ road to .500 ends with another two-game series against the Orediggers next weekend in Eagle.
