ASG asks student opinion on renaming

The CMU campus has recently been buzzing with the potential names of new buildings “ACB2” and “Renaissance Village.”  Some students appear curious while others show disagreement, but what most students do not know is that they have the ability to potentially name these future buildings. Students are not powerless and have a voice when it comes to their campus.

Students may suggest building name ideas to ASG at any time. Once the student body narrows down the ideas to three or five, the list, with ASG’s approval then moves to the Honors in Naming Committee. The committee is made up of staff, faculty and a student representative: senior political science major and ASG president Telbe Storbeck.

“We are looking for suggestions for ACB2,” Storbeck said. “ACB2 is what they’re calling it right now. A name hasn’t been put on it.”

The Honors in Naming committee can be called upon to meet at any time to discuss approving a name for a building. In the meeting, the committee discusses what is in a name and if the proposed name would properly represent that building. Once a name passes through the Honors in Naming Committee, it will then continue on to President Foster and the board of trustees for final approval.

“I think that it’s great that we can assist the students to be able to come up with a name, because at the end of the day I would rather ACB2 have a name,” Storbeck said.

CMU sophomore and Bunting Hall RA Christy Jersin supports and encourages students to voice their opinion of their campus.

“I think it’s important because it gives students a sense of belonging and would leave a lasting impression on them if they spoke up,” Jersin said.

Jersin explained that herself and fellow RAs do not like the potential name idea of the “Renaissance Village” dorms and have discussed other name ideas.

“I would participate in a forum to come up with different names for buildings,” Jersin said.

Storbeck welcomes students to ASG meetings for public input. He is very interested in the opinion of the student body.

“We’re looking for creative stuff, but we would like to keep it regionally named,” Storbeck said.

Storbeck said students are welcome to attend ASG’s meeting for public input on March 6. The senate meets every Wednesday evening at 7 in room 104 of Houston Hall. Students can also go to any of the ASG offices on the second floor of the University Center. They are also encouraged to comment on ASG’s Facebook or Twitter with name ideas. Storbeck can be contacted by email with any ideas or questions at tstorbec@mavs.coloradomesa.edu.
