Some Bull: Pondering ponds at CMU

Maroon and yellow pedal boats tied to a wooden dock, the pleasant splashing of ducks, students sullenly propped against a tree with a fishing pole in hand: this could be a possible scene here at CMU.

With the persistent flooding of the Delta Quad due to sprinkler malfunctions, the administration is moving forward with plans to remedy the problem. Their aesthetically pleasing solution is to turn the quad into a recreational duck pond.

The addition would provide year-round activities for students as well as a gaggle of new competitions and clubs. Pedal boats, a fishing dock and duck feeders will provide activities during the warmer months, while allowing the pond to freeze during the winter will allow for figure skating and hockey.

With these new opportunities, there is talk of a paddleboat club, fish and fowl club and cartoonist club, among many others, coming to campus.

Thrilling club-sponsored pedal boat races will dominate several nights each month. The races will give students the chance to prove their club’s worth as they bustle to the finish line while dodging oncoming columns of water being blasted out of water cannons by the opposition.

Each of the ducks transplanted into the habitat will be given the names of various members of the administration. Hunting will be off limits, except to remove any ducks no longer affiliated with the University.

There will be a weekly fishing derby in which the winner will be granted one week with the administrative duck of their choice. This gives anyone with a fishing pole the chance to spend a week with “President Foster.”

The cartoonist club will also be stationed at the pond for several hours a day doing caricatures of students with their favorite administrator.

“I think it is a great idea,” sophomore Jenny Franks said. “I mean it just floods anyway, so we might as well get some use out of it.”

Plans are not official, but keep a look out for this creative campus addition in the near future.
