CMU Greek Life is already looking to expand its borders. With the successful establishment of its first fraternity, CMU will be hosting three informational meetings this week to see what students think about adding a sorority.
“As Mesa has evolved, so have the number and types of clubs we have on campus,” Director of Student Life Mitch Karstens said. “There has been a growing interest from current students on campus for the formation of a Greek system. Sororities are a unique way for women to get involved on campus, form meaningful friendships and benefit their community.”
The meetings will be held in the University Center, room 222, Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
“We will be talking about the process of forming a sorority on campus and the steps we need to take,” Karstens said. “Sororities sometimes get a bad name or are misunderstood, so we want to dispel those notions and talk about all the benefits to joining.”
The meetings will include informational talks from Karstens and two women who have been in sororities. After the initial presentation in each meeting, there will be a question- and- answer session.
“[I] will be speaking mostly about the process [and] the steps the University needs to take, how women can get involved and Greek life housing options for next year,” Karstens said. “We will also be talking about the Greek life housing option that we will have on campus next year for men and women to get involved in.”
The other two speakers will share the benefits of being involved in a sorority.
These informational sessions are the first step in expanding Greek life to include a sorority.
“After the meetings, we will be evaluating the interest and how we would like to proceed. If the interest is high enough, we will start the process of bidding for national Sororities to come to campus,” Karstens said.
