On the same day the groundhog marked the end of winter, the CCU Cougars marked the end of the Mavs’ 18-game undefeated streak.

On the bright side, spring should come early, and the Mavericks are still leading the RMAC by two victories.

The Mavs improved their win streak Friday night, defeating Colorado School of Mines 64-51 at Lockridge Arena. Kelsey Sigl led the team with 20 points and seven rebounds, an impressive performance in its 18th straight victory.

“We pulled off the win at Mines because we started getting stops and taking pride on the defensive end,” said senior guard Katrina Selsor, explaining the mechanics of Friday night’s success.

Selsor had 13 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one block. This marked her sixth double-double of the season.

Having allowed, at the most, 67 points all season, the Mavs allowed 77 and suffered a defeat at the hands of the Colorado Christian University on Saturday night.

“The loss against Christian is still hard to take in, but we now know we are beatable and have to get better in every aspect of our game,” Selsor said. “Defensively, we need to get back to where we were at the beginning of the year. We know what it takes to work hard and be a top team. We are motivated more than ever.”

Sharaya Selsor recorded 23 points towards the Mavericks’ effort. Sigl, Bruna Deichman and Selsor each scored 14, 10 and nine respectively.

Sigl also encountered some foul trouble late in the game. The competition was tight throughout with multiple lead changes in the second half, but CCU was able to hang on until the end with a final score of 77-73.

“We knew Colorado Christian would play us hard for 40 minutes, and we needed to be ready,” coach Taylor Wagner said. “They shot an extremely high percentage tonight, and we gave them too many open looks. We need to be a little more disciplined on the defensive side and play a complete game.”

Even with the loss, CMU still holds a commanding lead in the conference with a record of 14 wins and this single loss.

Trailing in second is CSU-Pueblo, whose RMAC record is 12-3.

Coach Wagner also doesn’t appear to be worried about the effect of the loss, stating, “I expect us to bounce back and be ready for work on Monday. It is not panic time.”

Next weekend the girls take on Black Hills State (7-12, 6-9 RMAC) and Chadron State (3-16, 3-12 RMAC) at home.
