Charismatic, energetic, outgoing and sociable are all characteristics that describe sophomore Celina Sarabia, the new president of the CMU club La Raza.

Sarabia is a Criminal Justice major who also happens to be working on a minor in Addiction Studies. She hopes to one day go to law school at Baylor University in Texas and eventually become either a lawyer or a defense attorney.

Sarabia has been an active member in La Raza since she first began attending CMU in fall 2011. Soon after joining the club, Sarabia applied for the role of vice president and quickly excelled in the position. She has attended every event the club has hosted since her freshman year and is very optimistic and hopeful for what the club can become with her as president.

“Our Significant Month is coming up soon, and I want big events to happen,” Sarabia said.

She hopes to largely involve the CMU community.

“I really want to bring a burrito-eating contest to the school community and get everyone involved,” Sarabia said. “In the past year, the club has kind of been going down, and I really want to reverse that.”

In order for La Raza to flourish and to excel in the community, the CMU student body should understand that, although the club is mainly focused on Hispanic culture, anyone is welcome to get involved.

Sarabia and the rest of La Raza are also looking for a new reliable vice president. Joining on-campus clubs is a great way to get involved at CMU, and La Raza is a great and friendly environment to get started.

Meetings are held Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in the Student Life Offices upstairs in the University Center.
