Snow has fallen more times this season in the Grand Valley than the CMU women’s basketball team. The squad has had an unprecendented start to the 2012-2013 campaign under first-year coach Taylor Wagner. They remain unbeaten at 17-0, and have earned the No. 4 ranking in the nation among D2 teams.

“I think a clean slate is what this program needed,” Kelsey Sigl said. “New players, new coach, new system, all of which have been a great change.”

Offensively, the Mavs have been a juggernaut, scoring at least 70 points in 12 of their 17 victories. The senior-led squad has also imposed a physical shutdown style defense during this run, holding their opponents under 60 points in all but four contests.

The Mavericks faced a tough matchup against Metro State on Friday night, but kept their unbeaten streak alive with the help of 1,700 screaming fans in Brownson Arena, beating the Roadrunners 73-67. The Mavs shot 27-33 from the free-throw line, including eight from Katrina and Sharaya Selsor in the final three minutes.

“Getting a win against a team like Metro was huge for us, especially after they ended Fort Lewis’ winning streak last weekend,” Katrina Selsor said. “It sets the bar that much higher for our team.”

The Mavs followed that close win with a dominating 74-58 performance over Regis University on Saturday.

Selsor wrapped up an impressive weekend with back-to-back double-doubles, helping the Mavs improve to 12-0 in the RMAC.

The Mavericks are having a season for the ages, and have shown no signs of slowing down, as coach Wagner’s team is arguably the best in the nation.

“Coach Wagner brings another dynamic to the program,” Sigl said in an interview in November. “He is intense and has high expectations from top to bottom. His biggest focus has been toughness, mentally and physically, which he has prepared us to be from day one.”

The Mavericks’ road to perfection takes them through Colorado School of Mines in Golden on Friday, followed by Colorado Christian on Saturday. To remain unbeaten would be quite the feat, but the Mavericks still have their eyes set on first winning an RMAC title.

“We want to do something really special this year, and our goals are obviously to win like every other team does,” Selsor, an RMAC preseason all-conference selection said. “But the way we get there is what’s going to be special about this season.”
