For students involved in CMU’s department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Brenna Bishop is the ASG senator to talk to.

“People fascinate me,” Bishop said. “How they tick, how they interact with one another or why they say and do the things they do.”

Bishop is going on her second semester as an ASG senator.

“I like being a senator for the sole fact that I like having a voice,” Bishop said. “I like being able to vote on bills and different doctrines that come in. But at the same time I’d love to get an executive position. It’d be cool to be the person behind everything.”

Although she is not quite there yet, Bishop’s role as a senator is still an important one.

“I’m involved in a lot of decisions made,” Bishop said. “Basically, I go to senator meetings and vote on behalf of the Social and Behavioral Sciences program. It’s one of those things where I’ve always been someone that enjoys getting involved.”

Bishop has recently become heavily involved in CMU’s new Association of Feminists as the club’s vice president.

“A feminist is a really scary term and a lot of people are like, ‘Are you going to take your broth and burn it?’” Bishop said. “I think it’s important to have something for women here because women’s rights are only 50 to 60 years old. There’s never going to be a voice for women when we’re so different from men.”

There are currently classes being picked out for a Women’s Studies minor, and it should be enacted by the end of the year in the fall. Having classes labeled “Women’s Studies” is not all the issue is about.

“It’s a matter of talking to professors and having them realize that if we are creating this minor, they need to bring up the importance of feminism and gender equality in their classes,” Bishop said. “I think it scares a lot of people. I’m someone that would rather just admit that this is what it is, it’s important and it’s something that should be valued, but I’m not going to shove it down your throat.”

Bishop and president Ariel Diamond plan to hold monthly events in accordance with weekly meetings, starting with a showing of the documentary MissRepresentation in the game room.

As far as her other passions go, Bishop loves music. She is a big fan of alternative music such as Mumford & Sons and Of Monsters and Men, but her taste doesn’t stop there.

“I listen to country because of where I grew up, but then I listen to dubstep because of my generation,” Bishop said. “There’s too much for me to subscribe myself to one thing.”

Bishop also has a passion for historical movies, such as the recent film, “Lincoln.”

“I love that they’re creating movies based off of historical figures, because kids hardly ever read about that stuff on their own,” Bishop said.

On top of being an ASG senator and vice president of CMU’s Association of Feminists, Bishop loves doing volunteer work. Last summer she volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.

“I did ER intake,” Bishop said. “It wasn’t that exciting, but it was an easy way to help out. Anytime someone mentions volunteer work, whether it’s with kids or animals, I want to do it.”

After graduating from CMU, Bishop plans to join the Peace Corps before ultimately dedicating her time to working for a non-profit organization.
