Editorial: Help us help the needy

We at the Criterion have been collecting canned foods and jackets for about a week now. So far, we can maybe feed three people but can’t help warm any bodies. We hope that we can change that.

It’s the time of year where giving truly is better than receiving. Let’s be honest with ourselves: we have it really good. As students, we are lucky to be able to attend a campus that costs thousands of dollars. We keep out of the cold, and we get to eat every day. There are people in this very town that have been sleeping at the parks for days now, almost freezing to death each night out.

One can really make a difference. If one person does it and tells a friend about it, then they do it and tell their friends, and all of a sudden one can turn into hundreds of cans. There are people out there who would give anything for just a can of beans, and we can give them that. So next time you go to the grocery store to buy your Ramen noodles or TV dinners, pick up an extra can of soup and drop it by our office in the University Center. You can also go to Goodwill and find perfectly fine jackets and sweaters for very cheap. Anything and everything makes a difference.

The best part of the holidays is knowing that you helped people in need. Our goal is to help many people during these times. So please, help us make a difference in our community. Bring anything you can to our office or other marked boxes around campus. Let’s make truly happy holidays.
