America is filled with various cultures and continues to grow in diversity, but let’s take a moment to recall a culture that was born in America. The Native American Student Council offers students the ability to take a closer look at their ancestors and celebrate their culture.

“This year, we hope to bring the beauty of our culture to CMU,” Native American Student Council President Doreen Harvey said.

With a population of only two percent currently enrolled at CMU, the Native American Student Council finds itself struggling to grow in size.

“It would be great if more students took notice of our minorities and our history,” council member Samantha Blackhorse said.

The council works to acknowledge and appreciate its culture while exposing its value to others. Students of every ethnicity are encouraged to join and learn about Native American traditions and history.

Being Native American was, at many times in U.S. history, troubling due to the discrimination it would cause. With some of those prejudices left behind, Native Americans can more freely celebrate their culture. The council is proof that it has overcome its share of adversity.

“We plan fundraisers, social group events and invite guest speakers,” Blackhorse said. “Soon we’ll be planning community service events.”

With the council meeting on a weekly basis, the number of members has increased from past years.

The council will be selling tacos and fried bread to students from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. Students are encouraged to rock their moccasins that day as part of the worldwide event “Rock Your Mocs,” in celebration of the Native American culture.

“I hope it brings awareness and pride back to being educated, strong and alive, and, well, Native American,” Harvey said.

Upcoming events and general information about the club can be found at the council’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/nasc.coloradomesa.
