Kedrowski wanders from Everest to CMU

The Outdoor Program welcomes Jon Kedrowski as a speaker for this week’s Wednesday Night Wandering. Dr. Kedrowski of Vail will share his hiking experiences and present Sleeping on Summits: From Colorado to Everest. The free event will be in University Center South Ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Kedrowski is an accomplished hiker who recently published a book about his experiences in Colorado. He and his partner, Chris Tomer, became the only people to sleep on the summit of all 55 of Colorado’s 14ers in the summer of 2011. In May of 2012, Kedrowski attempted to climb Mt. Everest twice, reaching the summit on his second attempt.

He will be sharing his experience of hiking Mount Everest on Wednesday night.

“I’m going to take people through the Everest expedition,” Kedrowski said. “A lot of things happened on that trip. Some people died up there, and there were rescues that I took part in.”

Kedrowski was hiking Mount Everest last summer during one of the deadliest nights in history. Weather conditions forced him and his team to turn around, only to return the next week and successfully reach the top.

He will also have his first published book “Sleeping on the Summits: Colorado Fourteener High Bivys.”

Kedrowski has extensive hiking experience leading up to hiking Mount Everest. He has reached the summit of many of the world’s large peaks.

“I’ve been on expeditions in Asia, South America and Alaska in the past year,” Kedrowski said. “In the past seven or eight years, I go on about one big expedition per year. It’s good for you to go and see new big peaks, things like that.”

Kedrowski began hiking as a kid and used it to excel athletically in many other hobbies.

“I figured out that climbing mountains was very difficult,” Kedrowski said. “That helped me with football and basketball. It was like training.”

Kedrowski does not limit himself to hiking. He also takes advantage of a variety of activities Colorado has to offer: rock climbing, mountain biking and camping.

“I try to do a little bit of everything,” Kedrowski said. “It keeps you in shape, I think.”

When he isn’t busy climbing 14ers, he spends a lot of time writing.

“I’m always writing,” Kedrowski said. “Right now, I’m under contract for my next book. I’m out on my motivational speaking circuit that I’ve been asked to do, whether it’s corporate, for universities or other schools. I’m also about to start my own radio show in the Denver Area called Everest Radio.”

He has his own website at jonkeverest.org, where he blogs about his expeditions, shares videos and photos, information about his book and many links to his articles and news coverage.

“I’ve had a lot of really neat opportunities come to me, so I am pursuing those,” Kedrowski said.
