Film sets ski mood: Second annual “Flow State” shown at CMU

Wednesday, Nov. 16, will be a fun-filled day for ski and snowboarding enthusiasts at CMU.

The second annual screening of Warren Miller’s “Flow State” will be in the University Center starting at 7 p.m. CMU student Ariel Land is helping coordinate the event as part of her internship.

“We’re showing the most up-to-date video that he’s come out with this year,” Land said. “We did the same thing last year, but this year, we’re trying to elaborate more off the video and raise money for the ski team and also try to incorporate the ski swap that the ambassadors are putting on.”

Warren Miller releases a new ski and snowboard video annually, and the event is open to the public.

“It’s not just secluded to CMU students,” Land said. “We are encouraging the community to come as well as families, parents and younger kids.”

Many activities will be taking place before and during the movie. The CMU ambassadors’ ski and snowboard swap will take place from 3-9 p.m. Skiers and boarders can take performance tests to see how prepared they are for winter sports, and, from 3-7 p.m. the Monfort Family Human Performance Lab will have a machine that tests people’s arm and leg strength.

“It’s the same motion that your body does when you’re actually skiing,” Land said. “This machine tests your abilities and tests how in shape you are for skiing. We will have a contest for that.”

From 3-9 p.m., Powderhown and Telluride ski resorts will be selling winter passes. A ski conditioning class will be held in a room of the University Center. The Outdoor Program will also be offering an avalanche awareness program. Door prizes and a raffle will be going on as well.

“We’re also going to have ski tuning available, which is provided by the Mavericks Nordic, an Alpine ski team members,” Land said.

Tickets will be available at the door. General admission is $10, or $5 with a valid CMU student ID. All funds raised benefit Maverick ski teams. Food and drinks will be provided.
