In pursuit of wisdom

Do I see the same colors as everyone else? What is the shape of the universe? Is there life after death?

These are questions that most everyone wonders, but are just a few of the questions that CMU’s Philosophy Club contemplates.

“Everyone has a little bit of a philosopher in them,” Philosophy Club President Andy Bowen said. “It’s a universal thing. Everyone has a fundamental want to know these deeper things.”

Currently, CMU only offers a minor in Philosophy, but the Philosophy club is working on establishing a major. The club welcomes everyone.

“People don’t understand how much philosophy influences them,” club treasurer Michael Torres said. “Physics students are flabbergasted that the particle they are studying is made up.”

Members want to apply philosophy to their lives and examine what they can truly learn from philosophy, not just what it says.

“It provides mental cruxes of how am I going to get through this [life],” Bowen said.

For the club, philosophy is more than just a topic. It’s a way of life, which helps them to get students interested in the club.

“I keep finding things that people are interested in and sneaking philosophy into it,” Bowen said.

The club is active in the promotion of philosophy courses on campus and was surprised to see how many students really enjoy philosophy, with over 100 students currently enrolled.

“We have quadrupled the number of classes on campus,” club vice president Brett Baroffio said.

On Nov. 6, the club will be holding a two-hour debate over religion and science. The first hour is for the panel of professors to debate, and the second hour will be opened up for audience questions. The event will feature Dr. Les Miller, Dr. David Hale, Pastor Ken Vander Horst and Dr. Douglas O’Roark. The club meets every other Tuesday at the Ale House, with the next meeting taking place at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 30.

More information about the upcoming debate or  the club in general can be found at the CMU Philosophy Club’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/CMU-Philosophy-Club.
