Halloween costumes reflect intentions

Halloween: what was once a day full of fun dress-up opportunities and trying to score as much candy as possible has taken on a completely different meaning and purpose since entering adulthood. Now it’s a time for girls all across this fair country to dress as scantily-clad as possible. According to a now infamous line in Mean Girls, “Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.”

For the past eight years, many girls have adopted this quote as their yearly mantra and goal. Costumes sold in department stores and costume boutiques now have a new spin to them. It’s nearly impossible to buy a costume in the store without it being no longer than two or three inches past your butt or having the word “sexy” in it.

Due to the number of “appropriate” costumes, as some may call them, being sold in stores, it’s completely reasonable that girls would make their own costumes. I will be the first to admit that ladies get creative come Halloween time. After all, who in their right mind would think of making a Care Bear costume sexy? What about a sexy Red Solo Cup? Sexy iPod? Or, one of my favorites, in true college fashion, a sexy Bud Light can. See, girls are so creative they literally spend hours trying to make a normal costume “sexy.”

If girls spent half the time it takes making regular costumes slutty, they could actually make a creative costume that covered their vagina. Although it would probably cost more. If your costume only has to cover a small portion of your body, your cost of materials has decreased.

Some girls believe that revealing clothing makes them feel more confident and empowered. To those girls I say, “Good for you.” Every girl likes to feel beautiful and good about herself. It’s just that some of us can do so with our clothes on. If you’re one of those girls who feels better about themselves by flaunting it, then by all means knock yourself out in your house and not in public.

There is one thing about sexy costumes that I find extremely troubling. By the time Halloween comes around, fall is in full effect and crisp cool nights are the staple. Since I’ve never really had the urge to freeze off my lady bits, I wish those of you attempting to make Sesame Street sexy good luck. I’ll be warm in my leggings.
