Hall haunting

Somewhere in the corner of Tolman Hall is an office lined with paper, ribbons and event plans. Resident Hall Association calls it home and uses it to create a community across campus.

RHA is more than just an office or a name.

“It is basically a planning committee for anything in your residence halls,” President Julia Prodromides said.

RHA is active in making the residence halls a fun place to live and was at the Homecoming bonfire giving out “Free Hugs” shirts and hosting a raffle. Trick-or-Treat Street is their biggest event this semester. The event is from 6:30-8 p.m., Oct. 31, within Pinon, Tolman, Rait, Monument, Bunting, North Avenue, and Grand Mesa halls. Each hall has a unique theme picked by its Resident Hall Council.

RHA sent fliers to each elementary school inviting the families to attend this fun night of free candy and games, giving them a chance to celebrate Halloween in a safe, kid-friendly environment.

Residents are encouraged to help, whether it’s making the decorations or taking down and cleaning up. Each hall wins points for involvement, which apply to the Battle of the Buildings competitions. Battle of the Buildings is a competition set up to see which residence hall has the most involved residents.

Members of RHA will go around during Trick-or-Treat Street and judge each building’s decorations and activities and will award points to the best hall.

Penny Wars and Pinon Palooza are also great ways to win points within the school year. The points from these events add up to a final winner among the seven halls.

“The winner gets bragging rights,” Prodromides said, plus the opportunity to be labeled “the most involved and the most epic.”

“Pretty much everything that RHA does is for alternative things for residents to do,” Prodromides said. “One of our main goals was to make [campus] better for all residents.”

RHA hopes to start up an Alternative Weekend Committee within the next month. The goal is to promote safe, beneficial activities for students on campus.

For any student interested in getting involved, contact the Hall Coordinator of your residence hall for Hall Council meeting times. Students are welcome to participate in RHA as much or as little as they’d like, even if it means they just share their ideas with their Hall Council.
