Foster uses YouTube for student announcements

President Foster along with the administration came up with a creative way to deliver important information to CMU students by using video messages that are sent out via email and also broadcast on CMU TV.

Started by former student and current CMU staff member Sam Kilman, the video series began to let the president voice his concerns that students need to be aware of. The videos also raise awareness about events going on around campus. The topics range from recycling issues, ASG’s recent approval of serving alcohol at baseball games, the KMSA raffle, MavRides and plenty of others. According to Foster, it is a useful way to get students’ attention.

“The business department did a study on what students pay attention to the most, and they found that emails are pretty effective,” Foster said. “But, if I sent out the same email every week, students would stop caring, so I think the videos are a good way to get attention.”

Along with relaying information, the president also provides a trivia question at the end of each video. Anyone who has the correct answer can go to the president’s office in Lowell Heiney Hall for a chance to win a prize. This gives students the chance to meet and interact with Foster.

“I think it’s nice for students to have a chance to just come in and say hello,” Foster said. “I’m not sure if other universities offer that, but I enjoy giving students the opportunity to come see me.”

What began as an experiment last year, has gained ground and is picking up more views by students. Now that it has more viewers, Foster wants to include more prevalent news.

“The first couple of episodes have been pretty trivial information,” Foster said. “I want to start incorporating bigger news for students.”

Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for more from the president on CMU TV and YouTube.
