Flash mob promotes dance recital: Dance Society has successful turnout

Last Thursday and Friday Dance Society promoted its show, Naked Soles, with an attention-grabbing appearance in the University Center. Around noon they showed off their skills in a flash mob.

“We needed to get the word out about our show,” dancer Sarah Bullock said. “We did a flash mob last year as well and had a lot of success with it so we decided to do it again.”

The dancers took a little time out of their regular rehearsal to choreograph the routine they used, which performed to Gangnam Style by PSY. About 20 members of Dance Society participated.

“It didn’t take a whole lot of preparation,” Bullock said. “We used one of our company classes to get it all together and just went from there. We got a lot of different reactions. Some people were really excited to see a flash mob, some seemed confused and one guy even bolted out the door yelling that he was ‘gettin out of here.’”

The choreography used in the flash mob was very similar to the first routine of Naked Soles titled, “We Are Sasha Fierce.”

“We wanted the flash mob to be silly and recognizable which is why we chose Gangnam Style,” Bullock said. “It didn’t necessarily reflect our show though. We just wanted something that would get people’s attention.

The flash mob resulted in a great turnout for Dance Society. They ran out of tickets at the show and began marking people’s hands to get them in.

“We had really great attendance and brought it in a lot of money for Dance Society,” Bullock said.

This was Bullock’s fourth year involved in Naked Soles. She has been a part of it every semester since her freshman year at CMU.

The Dance Program’s next performance, Fall For Dance, will be Dec. 7 and 8 and Dance Society’s next show will be next spring before finals. For more information visit the department’s page at www.coloradomesa.edu.
