KMSA gives big prize: Raffle offers free tuition

Imagine paying only five dollars for next semester’s tuition instead of four thousand dollars. Thanks to CMU’s KMSA, this is an actual possibility. One lucky student will get to attend school for only $5 during the Spring 2013 semester.

KMSA has been in operation for over 35 years. Fans can tune in from all around the world daily. Funds from this raffle will be used to start a heavy-duty marketing campaign in an effort to put the station in competition with other local radio stations. KMSA’s general manager Kyle Davis hopes this raffle will boost the station’s status on campus.

“We need to get the word out that we are here, that we are better than we ever have been and we are a force to be reckoned with,” Davis said.

KMSA has been working closely with the Alumni office in order to make what was once a clever idea into reality. Media Asset Coordinator and videographer Sam Kilman came up with the idea early last semester in an interview with President Foster.  After completing a routine weekly interview for CMU TV, Kilman proposed to Foster that KMSA should give away a semester’s worth of credits to help fundraise. To Kilman’s surprise, Foster agreed and plans have been underway ever since.

So far, not many tickets have been sold and the chances of winning are optimistic. The winning person may use the credit for him or herself, or give the prize to someone else.

“This is such a unique and valuable prize,” Davis said. “It would be foolish for students to not take us up on this.”

Tickets can be purchased at the KMSA studio, from any DJ, at any KMSA sponsored event or booth or at JF Strothman Distillery on Thursdays from 7-10 p.m.

“We are really hoping that this is going to be the first big step towards a prosperous and bright future for us,” Davis said.

The winner of the raffle will be announced on Dec. 3 and they do not need to be present to claim the prize. For more information contact Kyle Davis, KMSA General Manager, at kyle_d@kmsa913.com.
