ASG elections: Candidate profiles

Kody Adcock- I am in my sophomore year here at CMU, and I grew up here in Grand Junction. My hobbies include snowboarding, hiking, climbing, biking, and pretty much anything else outdoors that you can do here in Colorado!I have two years of experience in student government from high school and love working with others to bring awesome activities and events to campus! Vote for me!

Amber McCormick- Hi my name is Amber, and I’m a biology major freshman here at CMU and I would love to be your Associated Student Government Physical, Environmental & Biological Sciences Senator. I envision a Colorado Mesa University campus that’s accommodating to the college student- I hope that is what you envision too. If you are like me, you want an environment that’s suited to better help you grow and learn during this unique time of our lives. This is the time to branch out! I want to help you do that any way I can. I believe dialogue is vital to make an impact, so if you ever have something you’d like to see changed, I’m all ears! I would like to be a part of ASG because I want to make a difference in my peers’ lives by making the college experience easier and more enjoyable. By the way, this is my horse, Casper, and he’s been MY go-to listener for years. Please give me the chance to be YOUR listener and advocate here at CMU.

Brenna Bishop – I am currently running for one in four positions as a social and behavioral sciences senator. I became interested in ASG as I found myself feeling the need to get involved with my peers, my school, and the community they both existed in.
In high school I took comfort in that I belonged to a new group of senators and was elected freshman class president. Later on I joined my schools dance team of which I was elected captain my junior year. The team provided me all the joys of competing as well as a sisterhood. I was presented with wonderful volunteer opportunities with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, Mini Poms, and the Carnation Festival. I took part in a program mentoring 6th graders called Outdoor Lab. The program organized children to spend a week away from home learning about biology, astrology, geology, and ecology. It also developed social skills and independence. This opportunity allowed me to recognize that helping children was where I wanted to spend my career, eventually being specified by trial and error into a Child Psychology major with an undergraduates degree in Early Childhood Education.

As college approached I applied to my dream school, The University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. I was elated when I received an amazing financial aid plan and scholarship. So you can imagine my distress when I was informed of a misfile the week before orientation to which my scholarship money had been given away accidentally. My last minute choice was one of the other three schools I had applied to. It was close to home, newly renovated in both outward appearance and curriculum, and had awarded me a similarly generous scholarship and financial aid program. I sent my letter of intent off, attended the last possible orientation and moved to Grand Junction within a weeks time. The decision was hasty and forced and not at all how I had planned to commit to a college, and yet, it was the best choice I have ever made. Each and every day here has helped to mold a life better than I could have ever imagined. This is why I truly believe that life’s tests may always be taken as a lesson and an opportunity. And why I believe I am prepared enough to meet the challenges of this opportunity as senator if lucky enough to be elected!

Brittney Long – My name is Brittney Long and I am currently a junior transfer student from Otero Junior College in La Junta Colorado, where I graduated with my Associate of Applied Science degree this past April. At Otero I was always known as a student who was involved, and could always be sought out for help, advice, or just simply a chat. After reaching out to be involved at Otero my sophomore year, surprisingly I was asked to become the Vice President of Associated Student Government at OJC. It was an amazing experience to be able to represent the students of OJC in some of the most important decision in school history. Besides holding the Vice President position for ASG, I was a Residents Assistant in the new Conley Dorms, as well as a full ride scholarship volleyball athlete and captain, nanny for the Resident Director’s children, secretary of the campus Christian Crusade, and the National Anthem singer for all City of La Junta and OJC events. I balanced all of these important things while first and foremost being a student.

I am double majoring here at Colorado Mesa University in Criminal Justice and Forensics with a minor in Psychology. My ideas for CMU Associated Student Government would be to bring my experiences as a transfer student to this University and work towards helping other students in similar situations become involved in different aspects of student life. Being involved in my schools has helped to shape who I am today and I hope I can help other students achieve the same. I am very excited to be apart of this institution and look forward to the years ahead. I appreciate your time and consideration, and as always, GO MAVS!

Cooper Cartmill – Cooper is currently a Junior here at CMU and has been here since his freshman year. He was on ASG last year as a Senator and is looking to be involved again. He has an intimiate knowledge of the school, the budgeting process, and the student body as a whole. Because of this, he understands that students on this campus have needs and that it is Associated Student Government’s job to meet those needs. His other interests include politics, skiing, biking, hanging out with his dogs, and anything else outside. Feel free to find him on campus if you have any questions.

Michael Shull – Mike Shull is a devoted Business Student and peer tutor at the CMU Montrose campus. He is originally from Boulder, Colorado and currently lives in Olathe, Colorado with his wife, Melissa. Mike spent the last eleven years in the heavy equipment industry as a leadership figure, and is currently working on his degree in business in order to become a CEO of operations with in this field. When he is not studying, you can usually find Mike in his shop, either dialing in an engine conversion or fabricating components for classic cars.

Orianna Rubin – My name is Orianna Rubin and I would love to be elected as an At Large senator! I love our university and I feel that our growth is giving us innumerable opportunities to get what we want done. Here’s a few things about myself to give you a better idea about who I am- I am an Environmental Science major and I moved here from Upstate New York. I work and guide for the Outdoor Program on campus, and I was a whitewater raft guide in the Adirondack mountains over the summer. I absolutely love the outdoors and all the amazing things it has to offer. I am the Public Relations Coordinator for the Sustainability Council on campus, and I would love to make our school a sustainability leader and prove that it can be done economically. I have been involved in various giveaways, festivals, and trips for students and I would like to see more of that happen. I am the kind of person who gets things done, and I want to be a part of your ASG, one of the most influential bodies on campus, so that I can make things happen for all of us! Thank you!

Sheila Cloud is a sophomore at Colorado Mesa University and is majoring in Environmental Science. She enjoys being an active member in clubs that relate to her major. For example she is the Treasure of Sustainability Council, the Vice President of Environmental Networking for Volunteering Students, and has actively volunteered with the BLM in restoring the river bed along the Delores River and trail monitoring in the county. She has also done volunteer work with the Tamarisk Coalition restoring the Delores River with native bushes, grasses and trees. Sheila is also employed at the Outdoor Program on campus and loves the outdoors.

Sheila  would like to see Colorado Mesa University become more sustainable. Some of her current ideas are to begin using only recycled paper throughout the campus, encouraging biking, converting the school vehicles to run on vegetable oils from the cafeteria or other  renewable source, and completely getting rid of plastic water bottles, and plastic bags on campus. She wants to work on the recycling on campus being more convenient, so that throwing things in the trash isn’t the easiest option. Sheila wants students to understand the effects they have on the world even when they don’t see the effect of their actions every day. One idea she has is to implement an energy saving competition throughout the dorms each month. This will allow students to get educated and participate in making the school more sustainable. Another good, hands on way for students to learn about becoming more sustainable, is an on campus organic garden. To do this she would set up times that anyone could come learn how to garden. She would also like to have an influence over the new building that will go on over the next few years.

Sheila is very passionate about these issues and being an environmental science major, Treasure of the Sustainability Council, and Vice President of the Environmental Networking for Volunteering Students on campus. It allows her to discuss ideas with people that are passionate about the same issues and get support and advice. Sheila Cloud works great with other people and is determined to see these changes on campus.

Stephanie Renzelman – I’m a Senior here at CMU and will be graduating this coming spring with a major in Political Science and a minor in Economics. I’m interested in a variety of things both on and off campus but until recently have failed to get very involved and am hoping to change that by becoming a part of ASG. If I’m able to obtain a position as a Social and Behavioral Sciences Senator it will allow me to get much more involved with not only other Social and Behavioral Science majors but with the rest of the University as well.

Andrew Knarr – Andrew Knarr was born in Dansville New York on July 12th, 1992. After a few years there, he and his parents moved to Colorado Springs where he grew up. He attended Sierra High School and played football all four years. Andrew decided to come to Colorado Mesa University because it he saw that he could reach his full potential here. He started as a history major and dreamed of becoming a high school history teacher. After attending Mesa for two years, Andrew gave up that dream for a new one. He wants to make the world a better place and he decided that the best way to do that was through politics and becoming a politician. He changed his major to Political Science with a minor in history and is running for a senator position in ASG because of the valuable experience that could be gained for an aspiring politician.

Brian Williams – Hello all! I’m running for the Senator at Large position because it is my sincerest belief that Colorado Mesa University is at the heart of our community, and that we as youth possessing the power of education have the potential to shape the world around us for the good of all. If elected, I would do everything in my power to be conducive to these ends. These are just a few of the things that I will bring to the ASG’s floor as your public official: Wasteful Spending: Ensuring that your hard earned cash isn’t squandered on frivolous publicity stunts. Weapons Policy: Modernizing archaic statutes to take into account the necessity of both freedom and security. A Cleaner Campus: Working with the ASG to provide the litter-free campus that you expect from a university of our stature. Activism: Ensuring that we establish CMU’s University status in a productive manner, and providing opportunities for students to get involved. Water conservation: Continuing to do our part to use our aquatic resources wisely in the wake of fierce debates regarding Colorado water rights.
Currently, I am majoring in both Political Science and Sociology, which has provided a strong academic foundation upon which to make wise legislative decisions. My achievements include being recognized by the Board of Education and the Colorado State Legislature for my work in speech and debate, earning a Degree of Outstanding Distinction in the National Forensics League, and placement on the Dean’s List for strong academic performance. Upon assuming office, it is my intention to put all of my skills and experience to work for you.

Christian Holcomb – I am senior at Colorado Mesa University and am seeking a degree in business administration with a focus in Energy/ landman management. I wrestle for Colorado mesa and have been a member of the student athletic advisory committee all four years of school.

Morie Mullenax – Dedicated to making CMU a completely sustainable and energy efficient institution.  As an Environmental Science student and outdoorsman I feel a strong focus for CMU is further enhancing our dedication to the community around us through promotion of recyclable/reusable goods and lifestyles. As students we can live our lives to represent the prowess and achievment we have attained as Maverick students and share this knowledge with those around us. The ‘Sustainability Revolution’ is a necesary and inevitable chance for us to improve our environment and the way that we use its resources to maintain the highest quality of life. Life on this campus should be a leader in environmental education and be fully committed to saving the land around us from further misuse and exploitation.

Ryan McConnell – Grand Junction has always been my home.  The beauty surrounding the Grand Valley has guided my path of studying environmental science and given me a commitment to the local community that stewards the natural beauty of the area.  With the recent expansion of CMU comes a large change to the local community and as a student of CMU and a local I feel obligated to help the local and scholastic communities grow together and I feel ASG will give me that opportunity.

I work in with the Sustainability Council and have volunteered with different environmental groups around the valley.  Every day I try and leave the world a better place than I left it.  Though I have my own opinions, I prefer to listen.  Listening to others is the key to true understanding of any issue.

Sierra Segrest – My name is Sierra Segrest and I am interesting in being part of Student Government. In all four years of my high school career I have been an active member in Student Senate. It was through Student Senate I have been able to meet some of my closest friends, go outside my comfort zone, and complete amazing tasks. From my sophomore to senior year I had the opportunity to uphold an officer position. By my senior year I was the Senior Class president. As president I made many decisions and held many responsibilities. I was also on the Tennis team for four years. I love tennis and had a great time with the team. Volunteering has been an important part of my character. One of my volunteer duties is working in the soup kitchen. It is a great experience to help them prepare the food. I am currently majoring in communications but I am still keeping my mind open. At this time I haven’t completely decided on what career path I will take. I had many wonderful experiences being a part of clubs and athletic teams.

I strongly believe that I am fitted for a Student Government role. I have an upbeat attitude and a great work ethic. I am always willing to try new things. I will bring fresh ideas to the table as well as listen thoughtfully. I know I will fit it as well as be different. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Valerie Trudell – My name is Valerie Trudell, I am a transfer student from CU – Denver. I am studying Business with a focus in Marketing. I like to snowboard, sky dive, go boating, traveling, scrapbook. My interests are poetry, animals and family and I love the color pink. I used to volunteer with places such as the animal shelters, and food banks. I used to be with the girl scouts and the nationally recognized club: alstrusa. If I were elected I would bring many new ideas to campus such as: extending the hours for the cafeteria, bring more resident parking to campus, bring more events that we saw in welcome week such as barbecues, supplying better Internet in the dorms, and providing a more comfortable restroom situation in the dorms, and have renting programs such as renting a bike for the day, or renting a laptop for a few months. I want to be a part of Associated Student Government because I believe the students should have a voice and should not just be walking around complaining about how awful something is and then wind up transferring to another school. I think I could help those students who have such complaints and help make their voices heard, not just shut down. If I were in ASG then, I could help make a better impact on the campus and make it so when our generation graduates we will be more than proud to send our kids to Colorado Mesa University.
