The Mavericks dominated Colorado Christian University on Friday night in a school-record 7-0 victory. It was CMU’s third consecutive shutout win.

During the streak, the Mavs outscored their opponents 13-0 and were feeling confident heading into Sunday’s game against No. 5 Regis University, who had swept the Mavs last season in a couple of shutout victories of their own. However, Regis would prove to be too much for the Mavs in their 3-2 victory on Sunday, giving the Mavs their second conference loss of the season and third overall.

“We were playing really well in both games and were solid on both sides of the ball,” Pittman said. “We just had a few mistakes that cost us [against Regis].”

The scoring started late for the Mavs on Friday night, with the first goal coming in the 37th minute by forward Brandon Burton. The 1-0 score would be taken into halftime, but wouldn’t last very long into the second half. Sophomore Alan Hernandez started the record-scoring for the Mavs with a goal in the 49th minute, followed by goals in the 63rd, 69th, 77th, 83rd, and 84th by Marco Escobar, Stevie Palma, Patrick Wall, Brandon Burton once again, and Patrick Laporta, respectively.

The Mavs knew going into Sunday’s game that it wouldn’t be more of the same against undefeated, RMAC-leading No. 5 Regis and would find themselves in a 3-0 hole less then 30 minutes into the game. Skylar Roy would put the Mavs on the board in the 39th minute to cut the score to 3-1 heading into halftime, and Michael Bagheri would bring the team to within one in the 81st minute.

“We did a good job limiting shots on goal,” Pittman said. “Their three goals were their only three shots on goal the entire game. We made some changes, and that gave us momentum going into halftime.”

The goal for Bagheri marked the first for him on the season, and put the Mavericks within reach of Regis. The Rangers’ defense stiffened, however, and prevented the Mavericks from scoring again, handing Regis (8-0-1, 6-0) their sixth straight win on the season.

“It was a very even match,” Pittman said. “If we eliminate a mistake, it’s an even game, so it’s a bit disappointing.”

The Mavs (5-3-1, 3-2) are on the road all next week as they travel to Durango to take on Fort Lewis College (6-3-1, 3-2-1) on Wednesday night, before matchups on Friday and Sunday against Adams State (1-8, 1-4) and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (5-4, 4-2), respectively.
