The men’s soccer team is riding a two-game winning streak after drubbing Adams State 2-0 on Sunday. The Mavericks (4-2-1, 2-1-0) controlled the tempo throughout the entire match and proved to be dominant on both offense and defense.

Goal scorers Tim Hofer and Marco Escobar led the offense and senior goalkeeper Micah Conrads anchored the defense with a shutout performance. Redshirt junior Skylar Roy stated that despite Adams’ subpar record, it was important to stay focused.

“It was a win we had to have,” Roy said. “The competition in the RMAC is really tough, so we have to pick up wins like this when we get the opportunity.”

The scoring started in the 17th minute when a header by Hofer found the back of the net off of a corner kick from Nestor Escobar. The Mavs had several other scoring opportunities in the first half, but the Grizzly net minder made some big saves to keep his team in contention. Strangling defense from Skylar Roy, Jeremy Gwerder and Blake Carlson kept the Grizzlies from taking a single shot heading into halftime.

The second half was much similar to the first as the Mavericks continued to possess the ball on offense. Adams State came out much more aggressive in hopes to get back into the game, but its tactics did not prove to be effective.

The second goal of the game came in the 80th minute from Marco Escobar, off of an assist from Alan Hernandez. The Grizzlies had an opportunity to score late in the game, but Roy made a defensive play to keep the opposition scoreless. He claimed that he and his team have been in a rhythm recently, which has contributed to their success.

“We haven’t prepared any differently for teams or anything like that,” Roy said. “We have just been working hard in practice and are playing really well as a team right now.”

The win puts CMU in a tie with Colorado School of Mines and Fort Lewis for second place in the conference standings. The Mavs will look to extend their winning streak in the RMAC when they take on Colorado Christian University this Friday on the road.
