Beer and baseball: ASG acts on alcohol sales

ASG unanimously voted to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages to fans over the age of 21 at Maverick baseball games this year.

The vote passed Wednesday night after months of debate and research.

“What we’re saying is, we’re going to do a trial basis, one sport, one season, and we’ll re-evaluate from there,” ASG President Telbe Storbeck said.

Selling alcohol at games is a concept that has been tossed around since last spring, when it was first introduced to CMU President Tim Foster.

“We had a number of students ask about it,” Foster said.

After hearing the idea, Foster sent students to ASG, who held several forums last year for student input. Overall the student body was open to the proposal.

“The approach is good, but we’re just taking it slow,” Foster said.

After getting feedback, ASG’s internal committee drafted a resolution that addressed all aspects of the issue. For example, the draft states that, “Any change to the CMU campus culture will not change the unique culture that has been created on the campus except in a positive manner.”

Storbeck also spent time studying how other schools handled the policy and whether or not they were successful.

“We understand students are busy,” Storbeck said. “That’s why we’re in these positions, to make these kinds of decisions easier. We want to be responsible with everything we’re doing in ASG.”

Several methods of regulation are being considered, and Foster affirmed that by the time the season comes, they will have a plan in action.

“Baseball is a good avenue [for alcohol]. It’s a calmer crowd and easier to regulate,” Storbeck said.

Storbeck emphasized that the decision to try alcohol at sporting events was for students benefit and making a profit was not an incentive.

“We did not look at this from a financial perspective,” Storbeck said.

Foster agreed that the move is not money motivated and explained that he does not foresee any problems arising from alcohol sales at baseball games.

“Any opportunity I think that you have to demonstrate appropriate drinking behavior is positive,” Foster said. “Alcohol doesn’t mean we’re going to get drunk. There are many people who like to just have one beer.”

If baseball season goes well, ASG will consider branching alcohol sales out to other sporting events next school year.

Well spoken, now let’s hope that the turnout is in such good taste that the practice can be made permanent. I also like to have a beer every once in a while to relax, not to get sloppy drunk or anything of the sort.
