A winning streak isn’t something to be taken lightly. It takes determination, willpower and, above all else, dedication. The Mavs’ volleyball team are on a five game winning streak following back-to-back sweeps over New Mexico Highlands (25-15, 25-14, 25-12) and CSU-Pueblo (25-23, 25-21, 25-22).

The Mavs played impressively in their RMAC opening games and are currently 2-0 in conference play and 8-2 all together. Brownson Arena was full of energy Friday and Saturday night for the games.

After a knee injury took sophomore outside hitter Casey Ball out of the match halfway through the second game, junior Haleigh Higgins ran on the court and ended the night with a team high eight kills.

“It’s always emotional when a teammate gets injured,” Higgins said. “But you just have to be ready to go in at any time and I had to go in and do a great job for her.”

The Mavs came out on fire Saturday night, ready to fight for another win over the ThunderWolves to go undefeated in conference play on the weekend. Over 500 attendees were greeted to a game worthy of their attendance as the ThunderWolves put up a fight, but ultimately falling to the Mavs due to service errors and only one ace compared to the Mavs five.

With Ball out of Saturday night’s game as well, Higgins again proved to be a clutch player, providing the team with seven kills, one block and one ace. Senior Kelly Regimbal had the team high in kills Saturday ending with eight on the night. Senior Megan Rush provided two of the teams’ aces and 20 digs to help give the Mavericks a win.

“It feels awesome to be on a winning streak and to being playing as well as we are as a whole unit,” Higgins said. “When we do that it’s hard for other teams to beat us.”

The Mavs will be on the road this Tuesday for their first RMAC away game against the Skyhawks in Durango, but will be back in Brownson Saturday as they take on Western New Mexico at 7 p.m.
