Stunning Grand Junction: Blue Angels are set to take flight

This weekend, West Star Aviation is hosting the Blue Angels along with other impressive performances. The three-day event begins at 6 p.m. on Friday and resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The air show will include demonstrations from the U.S. Navy Blue Angels Jet Demonstration Team, Indy Boys Inc., GJ Modeleers, Dan Buchanan Airshows, Black Daggers Parachute Demonstration Team, Prop and Rotor Aviation, and the Misty Blues All-Woman Skydiving Team.

The Blue Angels have been doing demonstrations for over 65 years. This year they will have many demonstrations from various aircrafts, including the C-130T Hercules aircraft, nicknamed Fat Albert. This aircraft is flown by highly-experienced Marine Corps jet pilots with over 1,200 hours of flying time.

Guests will be able to watch the Indy Boys Inc. show off their jet-powered school bus, School Time, that can travel at speeds up to 367 miles per hour while shooting out 80-foot flames. Paul Stender custom-built the bus himself for two reasons.

“The first is to entertain people because, come on, it’s a jet bus,” Stender said. “The second is to inspire kids to keep away from drugs. We do a lot of displays at schools and we are trying to show kids there’s more to life than sitting in front of computers. It’s important for them to have active hobbies and creative interests to keep busy and keep away from bad influences and drugs. That’s why we wrote our motto on the side of the bus: ‘Jets are hot, drugs are not’.”

Indy Boys also has several other jet-powered vehicles, including a jet-powered outhouse, a jet Humvee, an Impala and a Jeep.

The Misty Blues All-Woman Skydiving Team is the only one of its kind in the world and has been performing for over 25 years. From having women with private pilot licenses to highly experienced skydivers, they are the only skydiving group in the world that is operated exclusively by women. Their team consists of eight members, whose occupations outside of the air show include pilots, doctors, engineers, business owners, and instructors.

Dan Buchanan of Dan Buchanan Airshows will also be featured on a hang-glider. Buchanan was paralyzed in 1981 from a motorcycling accident, but began flying hang-gliders and sailplanes within six months of the accident. He visits over 25 cities per year, including international events.

“I have to fly. I can’t walk,” Buchanan said when asked why he loves to fly so much.
