CMU’s hockey team began its season Sunday with games on Friday and Saturday against the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Friday’s game saw the Mavericks on the losing end of a 9-4 score to the Lobos, while Saturday’s result was not much better with the Mavs falling 9-6 despite a hat trick by Hunter Smith. Coach Matt Meiring still felt that the team performed well over the weekend considering they haven’t even participated in an organized team practice yet.

“I thought it went really well overall,” Meiring said. “The scores don’t really show how we really did. We were in both of those games until the end, but then we just wore out.”

Other Mavericks who scored this weekend were Trevor Needham, Philip Flink, Alec Lever, Charlie Barnum, and Cole Sweeney, who joined Smith as the other Mav with three goals over the weekend in Albuquerque.

The team will have until Oct. 5 to prepare for its next game, when they will travel to Laramie, Wyo. to take on the University of Wyoming.
