Student participation sets all-time record

During Welcome Week students invaded campus and CMU has never seen turnouts as large before.

“We are definitely headed in the right direction,” PAC Council member Tess Matsukawa said.

Matsukawa was in charge of Water Day during Welcome Week and 500 students attended. Donovan Haynie, Communications Director of the Cultural Diversity Board, commented on the crowd when Mad Chad Taylor, the chain saw juggling comedian, visited the University Center ballroom.

“We had to keep adding chairs throughout the night,” Haynie said.

Last Saturday 3OH!3 had an audience of 3,500. They played songs everybody could sing along to as well as new songs from their upcoming album.

“Top 40 artists are what people want,” Matsukawa said. “We want to get more artists like that in the future.”

Haynie believes this is the year of rebuilding for Student Life. The new Student Life director, Mitch Karstens, has brought new ideas and opportunities for the school.  Also, this year for the first time ever PAC doesn’t have a chair member. Matsukawa said that all the members are equal and responsible for self-delegating the events.

Cultural Diversity Board received notable attention during the week. With booths set up at several events, their clubs made profits as well as strong connections with students.

“I’ve already noticed the club attendance has doubled,” Haynie said. “We’ve gotten a lot more people to come to our meetings. It’s going to be a great year.”

Cultural Diversity Board includes International Student Alliance, Gay-Straight Alliance, Black Student Alliance, Native American Student Council, La Raza, and Ho’olokahi Polynesian Club.

Student Life students are very excited at how well the school year has started and they are eager for the next big event, Homecoming Week. More events are in the works for the end of this month. Both Haynie and Matsukawa believe it would be foolish for students to not go to the events offered on campus this year.

“They’re your student fees, so why not go to them?” Haynie said. “Have some fun and get that college experience while you’re here.”
