Despite Cal-State-San Bernardino drawing two reds as well as seven yellow cards in the men’s soccer game on Saturday, the Mavs were unable to capitalize on a lot of their opportunities in the 1-1 tie game.

“(Cal-State) was very undisciplined and all over the place,” Coach Josh Pittman said.

The game saw the Mavericks down by one at halftime, but still seemingly dominant in almost every phase of the game, including outshooting the Coyotes 21-4 in the 110 minute game as well as 12-4 in shots on goal.

“It was an interesting game,” Pittman said. “We could have lost the game and then we should have won the game. We had a lot of chances, but it just didn’t go our way.”

After failing to score early on a red card drawn by CMU midfielder Gavin Lafollette, the Mavs received another chance in the 74th minute when midfielder Kevin Escobar received a through ball in the box before being fouled, resulting in a second red card for Cal-State. Alan Hernandez was able to put the ensuing free kick into the net to tie the game at 1-1.

“We were down 1-0, and we hadn’t broken them down like we should have so it was basically do or die,” Hernandez said. “I was just trying to calm my nerves and step up for my team. I think (the team) did well in picking ourselves up and coming from behind to tie the game.”

The Mavs face Northeastern State University in Hays, Kan., on September 7.
