KMSA nightlife

KMSA 91.3 is hosting its very first Open Mic Night on Wednesday and College Night Thursday at Jf Strothman Distillery. The distillery is located on 2862 North Avenue right by Texas Roadhouse.

Both events are planned to be weekly, but for now they are on a trial run to see if there is enough interest in the event.

Wednesdays are an open format where musicians, writers and performers will show off their skills in hope to entertain the crowd. Prospective acts are encouraged to show up and get on the list to perform.

Thursdays is more of a dance set up with a live DJ and hopefully in the future live bands as well.

The events aren’t meant to compete with similar happenings at local bars.

“The goal is not to create a party atmosphere, but more of a kind of nice environment with good music and a fine drink,” KMSA General Manager Kyle Davis said.

KMSA differs from other stations around the valley and from other college stations. They play a wide variety of unique music from Jimi Hendrix and electronic dance music to the metal that dominates the format every Saturday. They also actively take requests.

Part of the reason Davis decided to hold the events at the distillery is the elegant and simple atmosphere.

“The distillery is not a bar,” said Davis. “It’s a tasting room.”

Doors for both events open at 7 p.m. There is no cover charge, and shirts, stickers and raffle tickets will also be available for sale to help support KMSA.
