Intramural sports offer competition for non-athletes

As the men and women’s fall varsity athletes begin their new seasons, the student body of CMU also has the opportunity to compete in a new year of intramural sports.

This year, CMU will have seven different sports leagues that students can partipate in, including five-on-five basketball, flag football, indoor soccer, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, softball, and kickball. There will also be tournament events for select sports like beach volleyball, tennis, racquetball and dodgeball, as well as a few league tournaments.

Michael Hughes, the manager of clubs and intramural sports on campus, described the competitive yet laid-back atmosphere for anyone interested in joining one of the leagues that are offered.

“You don’t need to have any playing experience to join our intramural sports,” Hughes said. “The competition in some of the sports does get higher, but that is just the nature of sports. We try to make it as student-friendly as possible.”

All sports (with the exception of softball and kickball) will be hosted on the CMU campus and will have at least one game scheduled for each team every week. Teams must have a designated captain in order to sign the team up and hold meetings with Mr. Hughes to help relay information to their teammates. It is not mandatory for every member to show up, but at least one team representative and captain must attend.

“I try to do meetings on Wednesday and Thursday,” Hughes said. “These meetings help me see which teams are full and ready to play.”

The process of signing up is very simple. Once a team has been formed, the team captain must create an online account and sign up for whatever sport they wish to play on the CMU intramural website, www.imleagues.com. They can then invite teammates to join the online team, but must make sure to have every participant create an account as well. There is also the option to sign up alone as a free agent for any sport. This allows potential participants to either be invited to a team or request to join a team. Although staff is full for the fall, there are referee opportunities for those who do not want to play, but still wish to get involved.

Team registration must be completed by September 6 for fall sports. Free agents are allowed to sign up at any time throughout the year.
