3OH!3 hits CMU

3OH!3

Beer on the balcony, thousands of kids on the quad, a full stage with lights and a hit band rocking the stage: could this really be CMU?

This was the scene that filled campus most of the afternoon Saturday during the first annual Fall Fest.

There was a line of at least 50 eager teens waiting to enter at the north gate before the show kicked off at 11 a.m.

“I liked that it was here and that it was free,” freshman Anthony DeFeo said. “It was a weird band to see here, but it was nice to see a popular band.”

Local DJ and producer Daytona started off the music with his club style beats and stayed throughout the day, keeping the crowd going between main acts.

He was followed by DJ Lazy Eye and The ReMINDers.

The ReMINDers, a hip-hop group from Colorado Springs, encouraged the crowd to move their hands and dance, setting the tone for the day. At one point they stopped the show to ask “do we got any poppers in the crowd?” This sent the crowd into a frenzy and two excited “poppers” were invited up on stage to pop it for the crowd during their next song.

“The atmosphere has made it a really cool show,” freshman Matt Saunders said. “The people have been great and the music is awesome.”

This comment came as Saunders was heading into the Mav Center to take a quick break from the heat after indie hip-hop group Air Dubai’s performance.

The sun drifted in and out of the clouds throughout the day giving the many concertgoers an occasional break from the heat without going indoors, but still many took advantage of the cool buildings nearby.

“It is Fall Fest, so we tried to make it more like a day event where students could interact and it could be about more than just the music,” ASG Vice President Ariel Diamond said.

There were several clubs at the festival selling concessions or promoting their cause. PR Club, PAC, CDB and Ho’olokahi Polynesian club were selling concessions, KMSA was selling shirts and raffle tickets and CoPIRG was registering voters. There was also a beer garden set up on the west balcony of the Student Center where those of age could enjoy a beer with the show.

A lot of CMU students waited until the headliner, 3OH!3, took the stage to make their appearance, but this only grew the crowd at the last minute and raised enthusiasm for the headliners. During their set they claimed to have went to house parties the night before, expressed their love for Colorado and ridiculed a kid in a full lime-green spandex suit. All of which kept the crowd motivated and wanting more.

The band played an upbeat, hour-long set only to be cheered back up on stage for a two song encore, ending the night with their classic single, “Don’t Trust Me.”

“This was an awesome turnout for our first event of this size,” Diamond said. “And it is only going to get bigger and better every year.”
