ACS Fair: GJ vendors craft against cancer

In Colorado, the American Cancer Society has estimated that there will be over 22,000 new cancer cases this year. The number of new cancer cases for the nation increased by almost 40,000 over last year.

“It’s a cause that affects everyone in some way or another,” Relay for Life team captain Brandy Hillman said.

On Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28 Passion 4 Purple and the American Cancer Society will host a Craft and Vendor fair at the Clarion Inn on Horizon Drive. Entrance and parking at the Passion 4 Purple Craft and Vendor Fair is free.

Vendors at this fair will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Relay for Life event. The main sponsor for this event is Sonja’s Snuggables.

Sonja Kent, the owner of Sonja’s Snuggables is a big supporter of Relay for Life and dyed her hair purple for the cause.

“It gives me the opportunity to tell people about the event,” Kent said.

The money will help support the community’s Relay for Life, which in turn is a large fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. According to Hillman, Relay for Life is one of the biggest fundraisers in the country.

“It’s more than just raising money,” Hillman said. “It’s about getting the word out for ACS. It’s wonderful: it’s brilliant that it is happening.”

The American Cancer Society’s mission statement describes them as “dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.”

Not only does ACS help in trying to find a cure to cancer, but they also help patients as much as they can. They find doctors for patients and help support doctors in their research that have gone on to win awards.

The ACS supports local organizations such as, Look Good Feel Good, a non-profit organization that provides wigs and other products that help cancer patients feel better about how they look while undergoing treatment.

“Sometimes we even help with transportation to and from the chemo sessions,” Hillman said.

At the Passion 4 Purple Craft and Vendor Fair, ACS and Sonja’s Snuggables have reserved spaces for special organizations.

One is the Foster Grandparents Program an organization that provides a stable positive relationship for at-risk children or children with special needs.
