1-2 Punch: Bingaman, Robbins propel golf squad

When it comes to No. 1 ranked junior golfer Brandon Bingaman and No. 2 ranked freshman Sean Robbins, hard work has no age or limit.

“Sean and I are really good friends,” Bingaman said. “It’s really nice to have someone that has the same drive that I do. He’s been playing really good, so I’ve had to step up my game.”

Bingaman started his freshman year at CMU with a team-best scoring average of 78.32. As a sophomore, Bingaman was selected to the All-RMAC 3rd Team. He also competed in the NCAA West/Central Regional tournament where he led the team in scoring average at 74.25.

“I look up to him as a golfer,” Robbins said. “He’s someone to compete with every week. He helps me and I help him.”

After 29 rounds of golf, Robbins has an average score of 74.76, nearly four strokes better than Bingaman’s freshman campaign. Playing on a young team, Robbins is the only freshman that has played in all 10 tournaments, with Bingaman being the only other golfer competing in every tournament.

“I think Robbins is actually a few steps ahead of where I was when I was his age,” Bingaman said.

In the first tournament of the 2011 fall season, Bingaman and Robbins tied for first.

“I watched him play the last hole right after I birdied it and wasn’t really thinking about where I stood,” Bingaman said. “Then his dad told me he had a birdie putt to tie me. He made it off the green and asked me what I shot and I just started laughing and told him he had made that to tie me. We just gave each other a pat on the back.”

This year, the men’s golf team ranked eighth in the Central Region Poll. Bingaman shot 227 (78-78-71) in the RMAC tournament, and Robbins shot 234 (78-74-82). They both head to NCAA Super Regionals May 7-9 to qualify for Nationals.

“I think as a team we need to focus on the mental aspect and realize that we can go in this tournament and beat any of these teams,” Bingaman said. “We need to attack the course and play without fear.”

The NCAA Super Regionals tournament will be held at the Wigwam Resort in Phoenix May 7.
