Programming Activities Council and Cultural Diversity Board collaborated with other campus organizations to bring free food, games and live music for students to enjoy at MavFest on Wednesday.

“MavFest was a kick-off for CDB’s Unity Fest,” said senior Lauren VanRoekel, who helped organize the event. “It was a great way to get everyone involved and geared up for it.”

Unity Fest intends to open students’ minds and spread the positive message of diversity on campus through campus activities.

“It was a good time for everyone as we approach the end of the school year and I think it is a really good way to celebrate diversity,” junior Brian Casaus said.

CDB’s Casino Party in the University Center Ballroom brought 30-40 students to try their luck at Vegas-style games including blackjack, roulette and craps. Participants were each given a $500 chip to “spend” at the casino. Students were able to trade in their winnings for gift cards in a bidding war.

“It would have been better with a bigger variety of food, bigger scale games and karaoke,” junior Adrianne Brenholtz said.

At 2 p.m. the festivities moved outdoors to the Elm Quad. Participating clubs set up tables to raise awareness and gave away treats to students. There was a Student Health Fair and ASG provided the food.

“We had a pretty good turn out,” VanRoekel said. “It seemed just as well as it was last year and the weather held up. The campaigning for ASG’s elections went well. Since I’ve been here, this is ASG’s first contested race. It was great for them to raise awareness for student body elections.”

PAC brought Rootdown, an alternative/reggae rock band from Oregon, to perform on an outside stage. They played hits from their new “Tidal Wave” album.

“The atmosphere was really friendly,” freshman Amy Hollingsworth said. “People were really involved and the event was really organized.”

VanRoekel said she hopes the event continues to prosper in future years.
