Sutton nets 37th goal, Lax swept on weekend

Rachael Sutton is re-writing the record book for the CMU women’s lacrosse team (3-9, 2-4 WILA). Despite Sutton tallying six more goals to make 37 on the season, the Mavs finished the weekend on a three-game losing streak.

The Mavs lost at Fort Lewis 19-8 on Friday, followed by a 15-7 loss against Colorado College.

The Mavs struggled early against Fort Lewis, finding themselves in an eight-goal deficit.

“There was a sense of urgency from everyone once we realized how bad we needed to step up our game,” Lexie Chavez said.

The urgency sparked a quick four goal outburst from the Mavs. Their first goal came with six minutes remaining in the first half when Sutton beat her defender and slotted the ball in the net. On the ensuing draw, Maddie Spor won the ball and found Kate Diamond for her fifth goal of the season. Chavez and Allie Henderson both scored in the next minute, giving the Mavs momentum heading into halftime.

“We just wanted to keep our heads up and work on our transition game,” Sutton said.

The game went downhill for the Mavs just 30 seconds into the second half when Fort Lewis took the opening draw and passed the ball through the Maverick defense to score.

Fort Lewis outshot the Mavs 45-17, picked up 31 ground balls to the Mavs’ 18, and converted 20 of their 23 clearance attempts while the Mavs converted just 19 of 30. Maverick goalkeeper Lauren Wells finished the game with 16 saves and Sutton scored two goals.

The Mavs looked to rebound on Saturday against Colorado College, but started slowly after Colorado scored five unanswered goals. The Mavs’ first goal came with nine minutes remaining in the half after Wells made a series of saves, sparking a quick transition for Sutton to score her first of four goals on the day.

The Mavs came within two goals early in the second half but were outscored seven goals to one in the remaining 18 minutes. Colorado College took advantage of seven failed clear attempts by the Mavs. CMU took just 19 shots compared to 35 by Colorado College, who also completed 20 of 23 clear attempts. Wells blocked 10 shots while Sutton scored her 37th goal for the Mavericks.

“For me scoring isn’t everything,” Wells said. “It feels just as good to cause a turnover or to make an assist to a great goal, but I admit I take pride in scoring.”

The Mavs look to snap their losing streak Sunday at Regis University (6-6, 4-1 WILA).
