Popick National Player of the Week, baseball takes series

Senior rightfielder Jeff Popick has led the RMAC in RBI, and this weekend didn’t change his dominant position. He helped the CMU baseball team to a 3-1 series win over Colorado Christian University.

In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, the Mavs got on the board early as Jeff Popick hit a two-run home run in the top of the first. The Mavs added three more runs in the top of the second followed by one more in the fourth. Colorado Christian pulled within three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mavs answered with two runs of their own in the top of the eighth inning, winning 8-3.

Nolan Snell got the start for CMU and picked up the win, going seven complete innings allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out eight and walking three. Tim Moore relieved Snell and pitched two innings, allowing just one base runner. Colton Little finished the game 2-4 with two RBIs and Justin Rosales went 2-2 with two runs scored.

Jared Christensen took the mound for the Mavs in the second game and stifled the Cougar offense. Christensen pitched a complete game allowing one run on three hits and striking out two. Christensen moved his record to 8-2 on the season, leading the team in wins and complete games this season. The Mavs gave Christensen early run support in the top of the second, scoring three runs, two of them from a Bobby Cozine single to right field. Cozine finished 1-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. CMU exploded for four more runs in the top of the sixth inning and added two more in the seventh, bringing the final score to 9-1.

Dustin Fackrell led the Mavs, going 4-4 with two doubles, three stolen bases and three runs. Austin Kaiser finished 2-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Mavs played long ball early in Saturday’s first game with a solo homerun from Fackrell in the top of the second inning and a two run shot from Popick in the third. After that CMU scored in five of the remaining six innings, cruising to an easy 13-0 win and moving their win streak to eight. Garrett Carpenter pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and no runs or walks.

Popick, who was named National Player of the Week by D2baseballnews.com, finished 3-5 with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Tamatoa Demello, Nate Robertson and Kaiser also finished the game with three hits.

The Mavs’ bats were nonexistent in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. They scratched out two hits, losing 6-2.

“We just let down in game four,” catcher Colton Schoelkopf said. “And it cost us with a loss.”

Starting pitcher Dylan Evans picked up the loss in his 4.2 innings of work allowing five earned runs on four hits. Popick got one of the two hits and drove in a run, while Justin Rosales got the other hit.

The Mavs will host the Metro State Roadrunners at newly renovated Suplizio Field Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

“It’s pretty exciting to finally get back over there,” Schoelkopf said. “The whole team has really been looking forward to it with all the new renovations done.”
