Mavs qualify for Regionals

With only a week until the RMAC championships, CMU tennis teams played three duals in Pueblo. The women’s team won two out of 3 duals, ensuring them a spot in Regionals.

The men’s and women’s teams struggled against top-ranked Nebraska-Kearney on the road in Pueblo. The men’s team lost to No. 3 ranked Lopers  7-2, while the women lost to No. 1 ranked Lopers  8-1. However, the women’s team recovered from their loss with wins over both Montana State – Billings and Western New Mexico University.

The women beat the Yellowjackets 9-0 Friday afternoon and a 7-2 win over the Mustangs. They ensured a spot in Regionals next weekend by winning two out of three duals.

The Men’s team struggled this weekend, losing all three duals. The Mavs fell 7-2 to the Lopers, 7-2 to the Yellowjackets, and ended the dual Saturday with an 8-1 loss against the Mustangs.

“The men’s team had some very tough matches, but could not convert into wins,” coach Jaco Gerbrands said. “Our No. 1 doubles Andres Hernandez and Jordan Lyden took the spotlight with two great wins.”

Hernandez and Lyden had wins over the Lopers (8-6) Friday and the Mustangs (8-4) Saturday.

“The [New Mexico] match was probably the best win we’ve had all season,” Hernandez said. “We played probably the best three teams in the region. Pretty much every match was close.”

Hernandez and Lyden’s victory over the Lopers proved to be one of the highlights of the weekend. The doubles team they played won the ITA Tour last year and lost in the finals at nationals.

Hernandez also secured a singles victory against the Loper’s, beating Revel Yehezkia 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 (11-9).

Both teams will compete next week in the RMAC Regional Tournament at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver.

“We haven’t done great this season but we have hopes to do great in conference.” Hernandez said. “All the players are doing their best every weekend.”
