Classic curtain-raiser: The Diary of Anne Frank

History came to life last weekend in CMU’s production of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” Anne Frank was played by freshman Millie Schreibman.

“This play’s message speaks out strongly to me, and is something everyone should know,” Schreibman said.

This play was one of many events that took place last week during Holocaust week. It brought to life the diary of Anne Frank as she hides with her family from the Nazis.

“This play is special. It brings real things to life,” Props Designer Hazel Gibson said. “The difficulty was finding what fit the time era.”

This was Gibson’s first time as Props Designer and she faced the difficulty of a historical play.

“A lot of the things Ann talks about, in her diary, I have said or done. I connected to the whole thing,” Schreibman said.

All of the costumes for the actors in this play were created by students. Research, production, upkeep and fixes were also done strictly by students. According to Costume Mistress Bailey Alexander the yellow stars that each of the Jewish characters has to wear, which are ripped off each performance, had to be sewn back on after each performance.

“It’s cool because, for the costume design they really had to research the costumes,” Alexander said.

That multiple classes designed the set, costumes and other props for this play as class projects.

The theater department announced that Summer Theater will be coming back this year with multiple plays. Next year the theater department will be starting the semester with the musical “Rent.”
