Identical twins, identical success: Sera sisters use chemistry to their advantage

CMU has not only one All-RMAC tennis player from Laihaina, Hawaii, but two.

The Sera sisters, seniors Kelleen and Kaitlan, finished last season with a 29-6 record at No. 1 doubles and use being twins to their advantage on the tennis court.

“It’s so familiar playing with [Kaitlan], I’m so used to it,” Kelleen Sera said. “It’s easy to predict what she’s going to do on the court.”

From an early age, the Sera sisters practiced with each other, developing a chemistry that came naturally already.

“We have always had each other to play and practice with.” Kaitlan Sera said, “Even without a coach, we are both on the same level, and always had someone to hit with.”

As a freshman, Kaitlan was named All-RMAC Second-Team Singles and Doubles. She played No. 4 singles and went 26-3, then teamed up with Kelleen at No. 2 doubles and went 21-5. Her junior year, Kaitlin was named All-RMAC First Team doubles, All-RMAC Second Team singles, and went 6-0 in her RMAC matches.

As for Kelleen, her freshman year began with All-RMAC Third Team Singles and Second Team Doubles awards. Sophomore year, she was named All-RMAC First Team Singles and All-RMAC Second Team doubles.

To top it off, the sisters went 27-1 in doubles. Kelleen’s junior year, she was named All-RMAC First Team doubles, second Team Singles, and went 29-5 at No. 1 doubles with Kaitlan.

Even with a lot of success, tensions can run high between the twins.

“When we play doubles and she says something sarcastic, that could throw our whole match off because we are so close,” Keleen said.

Being able to play with each other since they could hold a racket really made the difference, pushing them to be better.

“When we play against each other we get really competitive,” Kelleen said.

While teaming up on the court, both twins are also in the nursing program.

”I knew I wanted to go into the medical field to help people and be with patients,” Kaitlan said. “We wanted an outdoorsy place with snow and wanted something different than Hawaii.”

The Sera sisters and the rest of the women’s tennis team face Metro State in Denver on April 5.
