The Egg and I: A good reason to wake up early

As we all know, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gives us the energy we need to stay awake during class and nutrients to keep our bodies healthy after staying up until the late hours of the night. When deciding what kind of revitalizing food to consume to start your day off right, there are several options in Grand Junction. After exhausting my MavMoney at various places around campus, I decided that it was time to venture out around the city in hopes of finding a breakfast restaurant that would offer quality and quantity at a low price. What I found was The Egg and I.

Located at the corner of 1st Street and Patterson Road, the unique restaurant is tucked away in between several other businesses in a grey and monotonous looking building. However, as you enter the establishment, you forget about the dullness of the structure and find yourself in a quaint and comfortable diner. The walls are lined with varieties of different pictures, dinnerware, and plenty of windows to allow the morning sun to warm up you and your day. As you enter the dining area to be seated, a large plaque takes up a large portion of the wall to the right. It reads, “Mother always told you to eat a good breakfast!!” which makes the small restaurant become a little more close to home. Once you enter an open table or booth, you will find all of the traditional breakfast necessities at your disposal, such as sweetener, maple syrup, butter, hot sauce, and jelly. A waiter or waitress will quickly come to your service with water and several options of coffee or assorted fruit juice. Since I am one of the few students that is not a coffee drinker I cannot give an accurate review of their selection, but I can tell you that the orange juice is as good as any restaurant you will find in the Grand Valley. The menu showcases all types of delicious breakfast foods that would satisfy anyone’s tastebuds. Pancakes, skillets, eggs, omelets, French toast, breakfast burritos, and even huevos rancheros are all potential options for hungry patrons. Although it was tough to decide, I felt that the Denver omelet was the best way to go.

When the food is brought out, you find yourself staring at a plate full to the brim with breakfast potatoes filling up whatever space the main entrée could not cover. After the first bite I took, I knew I had come to the right place. Three layers of cheese coated the egg omelet that had been loaded with toppings and came fresh from the kitchen. Each helping I took became bigger and bigger as I had a hard time pacing myself through my flavorful meal. Once I was finished and swollen in the stomach, my plate was removed and was replaced with my bill. I found that the price was fairly decent and worth it for the quality of the cuisine I had feasted on.

Even though I would hardly consider myself a “morning person”, I would consider changing my ways once a week to enjoy a meal at the Egg and I. My mother did always tell me to eat a good breakfast, and now I know where.
